From Medical Superintendent's Desk

Dr. Sr. Jude, a member of the medical sisters of St. Joseph, Little Flower Province, Lucknow, U.P, has been serving at Fatima Hospital, Mau, UP. Since May 1977. Having obtained her MBBS from Lady Harding Medical Collage, New Delhi, she served for two years in Fatima Hospital, Lucknow, before returning to Lady Harding for M.D. in Gynecology and Obstetrics. After another brief stint at Poliganj Hospital, Majhola, U.P., she headed for Fatima Hospital, Mau, in eastern U.P. where she was destined to be the patron of lost causes(as far as gynecology is concerned) just as Sr. Jude the Apostle.
Way back 1977, when she landed in Mau, there was no hospital or health centre in a radius of 40 kilometers. The dacoit infested area, notorious for ever increasing crime graph, posed many challenges and threats. Hostile environment where even an accidental death in the hospital could cause riots, poverty and illiteracy of the masses, attacks by extortion gangs and outlaws, paucity of resources, scarcity of man power, and even the alien culture and language (Bhojpuri) did not deter this angel of consolation from dedicating her life to the poorest of the poor in one of the most backward areas of India.
Initially she had to work as a general physician attending to all and sundry cases due to non availability of trained hands; but as more doctors joined the hospital, she began to concentrate on her field of specialization i.e. gynecology and obstetrics, To this day she has performed 80000 Caesarian section operations and thousands of gynecological surgeries. On an average she sees 200 patients in her OPD daily even at the age of 70.
As Mau is a backward area inhabited by illiterate people, the local dais or midwives rule the roost. It is only when they throw up their hands after complicating the cases that the residents think of rushing to the hospital. No other hospital would admit such cases and so high liability cases are always rushed to the door of this Mother Teresa of Mau (as she is affectionately called by the locals) because no one is denied here not even the dead. She often deals with barely conscious cases arising out of ignorance of midwives where the babies are wrenched out by the head causing the head to come right off, are attended to by this zealous num with great courage, Not even HIV/AIDS patients are refused admittance and she would gamely pull on two pairs of gloves and conduct.
